Betadine Antiseptic Solution

"The plastic surgeon brought out a small towel and small metal container filled with a reddish brown liquid (the topical antiseptic that they put on the patient prior to operating to keep things sterile). I was instructed to remove my gown and he proceeded to get on his knees and "paint" my body with the antiseptic liquid."  I think the surgeon said the antiseptic was Betadine Solution.

The surgeon would dip the towel in the antiseptic solution then rub it on my body until I was sopping wet from my feet to my neck. He avoided my head and my private parts but covered everything else. The entire process took just a few minutes. It was easy for him to see where he applied the solution because it would stain my body upon contact. The whole process reminded me of how I give my dog a bath.

BETADINE® Surgical Scrub is a microbicidal, sudsing cleanser that promptly kills most bacteria, fungi, viruses, protozoa and yeasts. It is used for hand hygiene, surgical hand-scrubbing, and topical degerming of patient's skin prior to surgery. (Because Betadine® Surgical Scrub contains detergents this product must be rinsed off.)

BETADINE® Solution is the aqueous solution of 10% povidone-iodine. It is a fast-acting, broad-spectrum antiseptic that kills gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria (including antibiotic resistant organisms), as well as most fungi/yeasts, viruses and protozoa. It is used for degerming skin, wounds and mucous membranes, and for preoperative skin preparation of patients.

Definition: TOPICAL ANTISEPTIC

A topical antiseptic is a solution that is used to clean the skin prior to surgery or other procedures. It destroys bacteria, which helps prevent infections during and after surgery. Contact with your eyes and ears should be avoided.

Definition: ANTISEPTIC

Antiseptics (from Greek αντί - anti, '"against" + σηπτικός - septikos, "putrefactive") are antimicrobial substances that are applied to living tissue/skin to reduce the possibility of infection, sepsis, or putrefaction. Antiseptics are generally distinguished from antibiotics by the latter's ability to be transported through the lymphatic system to destroy bacteria within the body, and from disinfectants, which destroy microorganisms found on non-living objects. Some antiseptics are true germicides, capable of destroying microbes (bacteriocidal), whilst others are bacteriostatic and only prevent or inhibit their growth. Antibacterials are antiseptics that have the proven ability to act against bacteria. Microbicides which kill virus particles are called viricides or antivirals.
