-
How much is the cost of a Tummy Tuck?
Costs of Tummy Tucks vary due to the patient's health, the type and extent of the Tummy Tuck, geographical location, which surgeon you use, the operating facility and other factors. My Tummy Tuck with Lateral Thigh Lift cost me $11,200. -
How much does the typical or average Tummy Tuck cost?
The average cost of a Tummy Tuck is between $3,000 to $10,000 in the United States. -
What are the hidden costs associated with a Tummy Tuck operation?
Hidden costs of a Tummy Tuck may include: lab work costs, pre and post-operative check-ups (these should be included free), visits to family doctor to get "medical approval for surgery", post operative antibiotics and pain medicines, post-operative garments, home health care support if you live alone, transportation costs after surgery (since you won't be able to drive), and possible loss of pay from work. -
Is financing available for a Tummy Tuck?
Sometimes. Depends on your surgeon or financial institution. One option you may be able to use is financing your Tummy Tuck with your credit card. If financing is a necessity, call the local plastic surgeons in your area and ask the receptionist if they finance Tummy Tucks or have payment plans. If they do then check out the surgeon before making an appointment. -
Can a Tummy Tuck be paid for in installments?
Sometimes, but it depends on your plastic surgeon or financial institution. -
Do I have to make full Tummy Tuck payment up front?
I had to, but that is not necessarily the case. Many plastic surgeons offer financing or payment plans to make Tummy Tucks affordable for their patients. Others may accept credit cards. -
How much would the Anesthesia for a Tummy Tuck cost?
My anesthesia fee was $1,200. Anesthesia fees are usually pretty standard and easy to estimate compared to the plastic surgeon's fee. You can probably get a pretty good estimate of the cost in your area by checking online. -
If I cancel my Tummy Tuck surgery will my money be refunded?
Depends on how quickly you cancel, your reasons for canceling and your plastic surgeons policies. -
Can I pay for my Tummy Tuck with my credit card?
Many plastic surgeons accept credit cards to pay for Tummy Tucks. I paid for mine that way. -
What is the cost for a Tummy Tuck in my city?
Costs vary with geographical location as well as the surgeons experience and the complexity of the procedure. -
How much does a Mini Tummy Tuck cost?
A mini tummy tuck, sometimes called a partial Tummy Tuck, removes excess skin and fat from the area below the navel and is less expensive than a full tummy tuck which removes skin and fat from the entire abdominal area (above and below the navel). The mini tummy tuck is popular for women looking to return to pre-pregnancy abdominal firmness. The average cost of a mini tummy tuck operation is about $3,000. -
Would a Tummy Tuck cost more for a man or a women?
There is essentially no difference between cost for a male Tummy Tuck and the cost for a female Tummy Tuck because the cost of the surgery is dependant on the patients health, condition, geographical location, surgeon's experience and other factors. -
Its there such a thing as a Low Cost Tummy Tuck?
A low cost Tummy Tuck sounds like a scary proposition and is something I would be extremely wary about. You tend to get what you pay for. -
Where can I find an affordable Tummy Tuck?
Affordable Tummy Tuck means different things to different people. If cost is a big factor in your decision to get a Tummy Tuck, why not start off by doing all you can to get healthy, fit and down to your ideal weight. The less work the surgeon has to do, the less the overall cost and impact to your body. Once you are prime condition for your Tummy Tuck then start shopping around for a "bargain" just like you would for anything else. Tummy Tuck costs vary from city to city and from state to state. Just remember to check out your surgeon and facility thoroughly. -
How much does an Abdominal Lift Surgery Cost?
I was "lifted" on the front, sides and back of my mid-section area (everything but my inner thighs) and it cost me $11,200. See a breakdown of my costs. -
What is the cost of an Abdominoplasty?
The national average cost of an Abdominoplasty (tummy Tuck) in the United States was $5,263 in 2006. Figure is for physician/surgeon fees only and do not include fees for the surgical facility, anesthesia, medical tests, prescriptions, surgical garments, or other miscellaneous costs related to surgery. Not Covered by
Insurance
Had to pay Cash
for this
Not usually. A portion of the cost may be covered if there is
a valid medical reason, but I understand that it is a rare
occurrence. Ask your doctor if he can provide the "required medical
reasons" then check with your insurance company. Consider your
deductible amount and the possibility of a future rate increase
(because of the operation) with your insurance company when you
analyze your costs.
Generally insurance companies do not cover elective cosmetic
surgery. There may be cases in which they will cover a portion of
your medical costs. These include having a
hernia
corrected through the procedure or if you have had surgery for
weight loss.
Calling your insurance company should be one of the first things
you do when thinking about having a Tummy Tuck. When you call your
insurance company to inquire about coverage for a Tummy Tuck be sure
to ask them if your policy covers the cost of surgery, the cost of
anesthesia
and hospital costs. Also ask them if there will be an increase in your
insurance premiums and if your future coverage will be affected in
any way.

Healthy Before Tummy Tuck
Preparing
for a Tummy Tuck
The accepted medical advice on what weight to be at before
undergoing a Tummy Tuck operation varies. Some say you should be at
your ideal weight,
others until you get between 0-10% of your ideal weight and still
others say up to 30% of your ideal weight, and to wait until your
weight loss had stabilized.
I did not have to fast, but I felt it would be
a good idea to eat lightly for a few days before the operation. My
medical instructions were not to eat or drink anything after
midnight before the day of surgery.
A
comprehensive list of how you should prepare for your upcoming Tummy
Tuck Surgery can be found on in the
Surgery Checklist
including a shopping list, what to do the week before surgery and
what to prepare the day before surgery.
I wasn't naked for my initial Tummy Tuck consultation. I was
only asked to remove all my clothing except my underwear. As a
matter of fact I was NEVER NAKED at any of my doctor visits (with
the exception of maybe on surgery day, but I'll never know because I
was asleep). I guess it depends on the surgeon that you choose.

SURGERY
QUESTIONS
Day After
Tummy Tuck Surgery
No Pain
After Surgery
I was. I had a general
anesthetic
and was asleep for the entire operation. Neat stuff. There I was
chatting with the staff in the operating room then I "magically"
woke up in the recovery room. Each operation varies though depending
on which Tummy Tuck you have and what type of anesthesia your
plastic surgeon decides is best for you. In some cases a local
anesthetic and medications are used making you sleepy, comfortable
but awake.
The surgeon makes a long
incision just above the pubic area that runs from hipbone to
hipbone. A second incision is made around the navel to release the
bellybutton
from the surrounding tissue. The skin is then separated from the
abdominal wall up to the ribs and then lifted to reveal the vertical
muscles in the abdomen. These exposed muscles are pulled close
together and stitched sewn into their new position using
stitches
in order to tighten them. This will help to narrow the waistline and
firm the abdominal wall. The skin flap is then stretched back in
place and the extra unwanted skin is cut away. After cutting a new
hole for the bellybutton, it is then stitched in place. ref:

A full Tummy tuck may take from 2 - 5 hours, depending on the
complexity of the operation. Mine lasted about 5 hours but I also
had a lateral
thigh lift at the
same time. A mini-tummy tuck should usually take from one to two
hours to complete.

1-2 weeks following surgery.
Absorbable sutures were originally made of the intestines of sheep (catgut).
Today, the majority of absorbable sutures are now made of synthetic polymer
fibers which offer ease of handling, low cost, low tissue reaction,
consistent performance and guaranteed non-toxicity.
Ten days to eight weeks.
It varies with each operation. I had a Tummy Tuck with Lateral Thigh Lift so
I had stitches on my front, sides and back. If you zoom in on the above
picture you can count 6-7 visible stitches on the belly portion.

RECOVERY
QUESTIONS

Recovering
the Day After Surgery
Recovering
2 Days After Surgery
In my case I had no problem going to the bathroom after my
Tummy Tuck. I was able to slowly walk around by myself the day after
the operation. I was also fortunate that the toilet that I used had
adjacent supports (such as a vanity and tub) that I could hold onto
while getting up and down. If you don't have such supports available
to you they can be purchased to suit your needs.
Before the surgery remove all hair from the surgical area.
This should be done with clippers rather than a razor. Shower with
antiseptic soap the week before and the night before surgery. After
the surgery take the antibiotics exactly as directed by your
surgeon. Ask your surgeon for what type of bandages to use, what
antibiotic ointments to apply, how to clean the wound and how often
to change the bandages. Watch for signs of infection including
fever, chills and sweats. Also look at the wound area for redness or
pus drainage at the wound area. Contact your surgeon immediately at
the first signs of infection.
Typically: first few days you will have some discomfort, swelling
and pain (controlled with medication). Get lots of bed rest.
It may take 3 - 6 weeks until you feel back to normal, depending on
the shape that you are in. If you are in top shape you may feel
normal in 1 -2 weeks.
Sleep on your back with your
legs elevated.
Some people purchase special wedges to place under their legs.
Others just use pillows. Some surgeons recommend to their patients
to sleep in a chair.
Most likely. Most surgeons instruct their patients to wear
special garments.
Some do not.
It
varies with each surgeon. Some say after a few days, others say
longer and others say to wait until after the
surgical drains
are removed.
Driving after a Tummy Tuck is usually permitted about two weeks
after surgery.
Yes.
Exercise is plays a very
important role in recovering from tummy tuck
surgery. The best and earliest exercise is to start walking as soon
as you can.
Typically you can exercise lightly in about 3 - 4 weeks following
Tummy Tuck Surgery. Go slowly and follow your doctor's advice
regarding exercise. You can hurt yourself if you overdo it. Be
careful not to stretch or pull in the area of the stitches or tummy
area.
Sun tanning damages skin, therefore it is recommended to
protect your scars from direct sun exposure and tanning for 6
months.
It really depends on how well you are recovering and what type of
work you do. For office work typically you can return to work in one
to two weeks. For more strenuous manual labor work up to 6 weeks or
longer. I had a Tummy Tuck with a
Lateral Thigh Lift
operation and I felt that one week was about right for me (office
work).
About 2 weeks after my Tummy Tuck
during a follow-up visit, the doctor noticed that it looked like I
had some fluid retention (drainage) in my midsection and decided to
drain it. He inserted a "big syringe" just below my
belly button
and drained (sucked out) about ½ cup of red drainage fluid from my
belly area. He told me not to look, and I told him I did not want to
but I wanted to see the syringe and how much it contained after he
was done. I was surprised to see so much drainage was still inside
me. He said that it was not uncommon and that by draining it the way
he did saves my body the trouble of absorbing it and aids in the
healing process. Note: When he first brought out the big needle
(syringe) needless to say I was a little apprehensive, but because
my belly area was still numb I didn't feel a thing.
It's been over a year since I had my tummy tuck with lateral thigh
lift and even now I find that after I eat a large meal my stomach
feels full and stuffed very quickly. I feel that if I eat any more
my stomach will explode. It's as if I had lap band or gastric bypass
surgery (which I did not). Before my tummy tuck I could eat a large
meal with little or no discomfort afterwards because my stomach
could stretch outwards and not be hampered by the surrounding skin
or tissue. Since the excess skin was cut away and the remaining skin
tightened my stomach has nowhere to expand to. I feel like it is
restrained by whatever internal sutures were inserted by the surgeon
and my tightened skin. This is a good thing because it prevents me
from eating too much at one sitting. Sometimes after I do eat too
much I put on my old compression garment to "hold in" my stomach.

This
varies greatly depending on who you listen to. I had a Tummy Tuck
and a Lateral Thigh Lift
(where they cut around my entire body) and throughout the entire
experience I HAD NO PAIN and little if any discomfort. I was
provided with enough pain medications for only 2 days, but I doubt
that I even needed that. For the typical Tummy Tuck they say that
you would most likely have some discomfort and some pain
(controllable with medications) for the first few days. Some patients just take regular
non-prescription Tylenol for comfort after surgery. Valium is
sometimes given to some patients for relaxation and as a sleep aid.
Unless there are some other type of problems or complications that
should be about it.
The two prescriptions that I
received were for Keflex 500mg an antibiotic (20 pills) and Mepergan
Fortis for pain (40 pills). Valium is sometimes given to for
relaxation and a sleep aid.

Some leg swelling is common and temporary after surgery. To
reduce the swelling lay down and elevate your legs above the level

placed on the legs. Other suggestions include decreasing your salt
intake and wearing support hose. If swelling persists see your
doctors as swelling is sometimes a symptom of blood clots in leg

Yes. Most, if not all surgical incisions leave scars. Severity of
the scars depend on your health, how fast you heal, the surgical
technique used, the type of operation as well as many other factors.
Tummy Tuck scars may last up to two years. For those with serious
scars other options may include laser scar removal, scar revisions
or other surgical techniques. Generally Tummy
Tuck scars appear
dark and thick for the few weeks to a few months then start fading
over the following months. Most tummy tuck scars grow lighter with
time and may take up to a year to flatten out and lighten in color
where they may almost fade away completely.
See my scars after one year.
The surgeon takes particular care to make incisions below the line
of swimsuits or underwear so they will be hidden from sight.
Applying a topical
steroid cream for a few days following surgery can significantly
reduce scars. If done consistently for about 6 weeks, the scars will
fade faster and become much less noticeable.

New York, NY (July 12, 2007) - The American Society for Aesthetic
Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) announced today that ambulatory
abdominoplasty (“tummy tuck”) may be safely and effectively
performed at an accredited outpatient surgery facility. Findings
from a retrospective analysis of outpatient abdominoplasty
procedures performed over the past ten years are published in the
May/June 2007 issue of the Aesthetic Surgery Journal (ASJ), the
Societys official peer-reviewed journal. According to ASAPS data,
abdominoplasty is one of the top five cosmetic surgical procedures
performed in the United States, with approximately 172,500 tummy
tucks performed in 2006, compared with just 34,000 in 1997.
“Even though these procedures are commonly performed on an
outpatient basis, we had few large, published studies to support
outpatient abdominoplasty as a safe and effective operation,” said
W. Grant Stevens, MD, lead author of the study. “This large,
long-term study clearly illustrates that these procedures may be
safely performed in an accredited outpatient facility.”
The study consisted of a retrospective review of 519 consecutive
abdominoplasty procedures performed over 10 years at a single
outpatient surgery facility certified by the American Association
for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities. All procedures
were performed by one of two senior surgeons, and all patients
received general anesthesia administered by a board-certified
anesthesiologist. The outpatient complication rates in this
outpatient study, including seroma (10.6%) and unacceptable
abdominal or umbilical scars (7.9%), compared favorably with
previously published complication rates for inpatient procedures.
The authors cautioned, however, that although outpatient
abdominoplasty is safe and effective, proper follow-up care is
imperative, and patients need to have responsible caretakers stay
with them after surgery. source:

The
result of a Tummy Tuck will last for many years, but is contingent
on a number of factors including weight gain, fitness, health,
pregnancy, sun damage and increasing age. The best way to maintain
your flat stomach from a Tummy Tuck is to exercise regularly and eat
a healthy diet.
Tummy Tuck (also known as
Abdominoplasty)
is an elective cosmetic surgery of the abdomen needed to remove
excess skin and fat (saggy skin and wrinkles) and tighten the skin
over the stomach. It is the only known remedy to remove baggy skin
that is so stretched out that that it has lost it's elasticity and
no amount of exercise or proper nutrition can restore it.
Yes, abdominoplasty is the medical term for Tummy Tuck.

Extended Tummy Tucks -
includes a complete Tummy Tuck with extensions into the thighs
(front and/or sides).
Combination procedures - combining an Tummy Tuck
liposuction contouring, breast reduction, breast lift, or
occasionally hysterectomy.
A Tummy Tuck may be right for you if:
- You have sagging abdominal skin.
- You have excess fat in your abdomen.
- Your weight loss has stabilized at a healthy weight and you
exercise regularly.
- You have no plans to become pregnant.
- Exercise won't remove the sagging skin.
- You have good muscle tone.
- You do not smoke.
Tummy Tucks are performed at hospitals, at the surgeons office
(facility) or medical clinic. Start your search by contacting the
local
plastic surgeons
in your area.
You
can expect to have a flatter stomach (the saggy skin should be gone)
and have a more sleek appearance leading to improved self
confidence. You will probably have a scar that will fade more and
more with time, but that will be hidden beneath the underwear or
swim suit line.
You can get a pretty good idea on which type of Tummy Tuck is right
for you just by looking in mirror and comparing with Before and
After pictures for both mini and full Tummy Tucks.
Generally yes, unless you have a unique circumstance. Consult with
your surgeon for a reality check on your expectations. You can get a

Not always. Liposuction is an option for your plastic surgeon. His
decision will be based on your health, condition, the risks
involved, the complexity of the operation and other factors.
From what I have researched only about 2% of the Tummy Tucks in the
U.S. for the year 2007 were performed for men.
In 2008 147,392 Abdominoplasty Opereations (tummy tucks) were
performed in the United States. Of these 143,005 (97%) were
performed on women. 4,387 (3%) were performed on men. Statistics
courtesty of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery
(ASAPS).
Current statistics
on this subject are hard to find. I did find the following:
For the Year 2007
- 185,335 total Tummy Tuck procedures were performed (both men and
women)
- 180,457 Tummy Tuck procedures were for women
- Tummy Tuck
was one of the top five cosmetic procedures among men and women in
2007
- The number of
surgical and nonsurgical procedures performed on men increased 17
percent since 2006.

Not necessarily. Many Tummy Tucks are performed at the surgeon's
office or clinic on an outpatient basis.
Yes. It is recommended that you wait until after pregnancy to have a
Tummy Tuck.
The best source of advice for a Tummy Tuck comes directly from your
plastic surgeon. Better yet, consult with a number of plastic
surgeon. Aside from that the internet will provide you with all the
information you need to gain the knowledge you need to make an
educated decision.
Lliposuction, Mesotherapy, tummy toner creams, mechanical
based solutions, exercising, girdles and compression garments all
are things to look at. Whether they will work to your satisfaction
is a different matter. I haven't found anything that permanently
gets rid of the excess skin and fat cells like a Tummy Tuck.
An extended Tummy Tuck is one where the surgeon not only
performs a full Tummy Tuck but also removes excess skin and fat from
both sides and tightens the muscles at the flank and hip area.
An endoscopic Tummy Tuck (endoscopic abdominoplasty) is a
form of a mini Tummy Tuck and is best suited for patients with a
protruding abdomen but small amounts of excess skin. It is far less
invasive than a full Tummy Tuck and has less side effects and
complications. No skin is removed during an endoscopic Tummy Tuck.
The surgeon performs the procedure through several small incisions
along the pubic bone and belly button so scars are hardly visible or
easily concealed. The surgeon uses long slender instruments
(endoscope - small camera attached to small surgical instruments) to
tighten the abdominal muscles and suture them into place.
Liposuction may be used to improve the contour of the abdomen during
the procedure.
Yes it can. If you fall back into your old habits of eating
too much so that you skin stretches out again or if you become
pregnant, then the Tummy Tuck that you had might need follow-up
surgery to get it looking like it did. However, if you watch your
weight, exercise and eat right your Tummy Tuck will last many years
if not a lifetime.
