Drey Tummy Tuck Forum; Tummy Tuck Message Board, Abdominoplasty Forum Had a tummy tuck almost 4 weeks ago, and my bellybutton is red, white, with an odor and still drains. Is this normal after 4 weeks? Tummy Tuck Forum Response – I can’t tell you what is “normal” or not but my belly button “redness” went away in about a week, never drained and never had an odor. The best thing would be is to check back with your surgeon and have him/her take a look at it. Tanner. Ref Tummy Tuck Infection.
The following post from our forum is from a woman whose tummy tuck surgical drain tubing was leaking at the point of insertion into her body. She was able to stop the leaking by clearing or removing the obstruction in her surgical drain tubing.

Hi! I just located this very informative site after googling about my drain leaking at point of insertion. For about a day, a considerable amount of fluid has been “escaping: through the drain insertion hole. After reading all of your wonderfully helpful information, I decided to squeeze my drain tubing. Lo and behold, big clots and 45 cc’s of fluid in bulb! I am 11 days post-op and so glad I made this decision. Thank you for providing me with some much needed assistance. It seems that doctors offices all too often “presume” that we know what to expect before, during and after recovery. With no previous experience of this sort, how can one always know what questions to ask? Thanks, again, to all that contributed.

You are the first person that I have actually heard from who had a clot in their surgical drain tubing and removed it by squeezing or “milking” it. I’m glad it worked for you.
You would think that surgeons would have a handout that they give their patients that tell you all this stuff. Maybe some do, but mine sure didn’t (looks like yours didn’t either).
If you have any tidbits of information that you would like to pass along to other’s let me know and I will include it in the Tummy Tuck Forum.
Good luck with your recovery.

Korie Tummy Tuck Forum; Tummy Tuck Message Board, Abdominoplasty Forum I had clots from birth cintro, in 2005, I had a min tummy tuck a year ago, now I’m scheduled for a full tummy tuck, I want abdomen tightened in the upper area. I had no problems at all with the last surgery, does this mean I should be ok with this one, and shouldn’t have to worry about clots. I took lovanox 2 weeks after surgery. Is a full tummy tuck comparable to a mini. I am 38 years old. Tummy Tuck Forum Response – Sorry, but these questions can only be answered by your surgeon. Good luck, Tanner

I would go back to my surgeon immediately to have him take a look at it.
Last week I received an email from “Drey” who said that his/her “Tummy Tuck Belly Button Is Red, It Drains & Has An Odor” four weeks after tummy tuck surgery. It was fairly serious and lead to him/her losing the belly button.
There’s no reason to believe that your situation or outcome will be similar, but just to be on the safe side I would seek medical attention as soon as possible. It may be just an infection which they can treat with medication.
You may want to go to the tummy tuck forum and Drey’s posts dated as follows.

Carla Tummy Tuck Forum; Tummy Tuck Message Board, Abdominoplasty Forum I had a liposuction and tummy tuck the same day. When I went back to the PS for my first visit, I thought I had a large bruise. Instead it was black and my doctor said it was dead skin cells. Now I need another surgery to get rid of this problem. I have heard of skin graphs to cover the hole they put in your tummy to cover what was cut out. Can you give me some idea of what they are going to do? I am 53 and weigh 135. Tummy Tuck Forum Response – Carla, Sorry, but I don’t know. I never had that problem and don’t know anything about that kind of surgery. The best thing would be to call or go back to your surgeon for a full explanation. Good luck. Tanner

I am also having a stabing pain on my lower stomach near the scar. The more I work out and walk it hurts. Is this normal because I am worried something is wrong and my doctor says I’m fine. He is’nt the nicest to me cause I had alot of pain months after and told me it was in my head that he’s never had a patient in that much pain after 2 months. Please let me know if the swelling this bad is normal after 6 months with pain Thank you so much. Jamie

I would think that 6 months after a tummy tuck you would be pretty much healed from the surgery and I wouldn’t think that it would be “normal”.
Your swelling and pain may not be related to your tummy tuck.
The doctor who told you it’s in your head, is that your tummy tuck surgeon or your family doctor? Did he run tests or did he just look at you and say that you were fine.
In any case you may want to go to a different doctor for a second opinion.
Thanks, to see another surgeon it would cost 200. For them to see me it’s crazy! Yes it was my surgeon who told me it was in my head. I had a cat scan and ultra sound and nothing is wrong inside. He said that my swelling is normal and if I exercise it will go down but it’s not.
The following post from our forum is from a women who had a tummy tuck 2-1/2 months ago and now her tummy has a hard lump the size of a baseball and she is wondering if this is normal or should she be concerned.
Date: 11/16/2011 Submitted by: MicheleLarge Lump In Belly After Tummy Tuck
I talked to you recently via email and you were very informative. I really appreciated your response and attention. I was wondering if I could get your opinion. My tummy tuck was 8/26/2011. I have a followup appointment this coming Monday, my doctor acts like it’s a big deal if I call. I will talk to her about my situation on Monday, but I still wanted to get your opinion if I could. You seem like a nice person!
Did you ever experience a large lump of hardness in the lower abdomen (mines below the belly button)? It’s about the size of a baseball. Do you think this is something that’s normal to experience during recovery of a tummy tuck? The hardness distends my tummy out and is really upsetting me. I feel alone on this because I don’t know anybody who’s had an abdominoplasty and my doctor acts like I’m going to sue her every time I have a question, very defensive. She didn’t take the drains out until 8 weeks. My fluid output was so high, they finally had to remove the last drain to lower risk of infection (150 cc per day). My point in mentioning this is because I don’t feel that the hardness I’m experiencing is fluid. It’s very hardened. If you have any experience with this I would appreciate if you could let me know so that I can ask the right questions.
Thank you soooooo much for your help!

Even though it is hard, I wouldn’t rule out the possibility that your hard area may indeed be fluid. That seems to be a fairly normal occurrence especially in your case since you say your fluid output was so high.
I say this because:
During my recovery period, I think I remember a small hard area below my belly button (about the size and shape of two fingers stuck together). That was the same area that the surgeon later in one of my follow-up meetings drained out fluid with a syringe.
Here is correspondence with a women who had a Hard Protrusion Below Belly Button After Tummy Tuck. It turned out to be a collection of fluid.
In an unrelated incident, I had an accident when I was younger and the back of my leg developed a very large, black and blue colored lump on it. It was very hard. It turned out later that it too had to be drained of fluid. My point is, even though it is hard and doesn’t act or feel like a collection of fluid to the touch, it still may be fluid.
If surgical drains are removed before your body stops producing the drainage fluid (as in your case) the fluid has no place to go and will likely pool if your body can’t absorb it fast enough.
If your lump does turn out to be trapped fluid, your doctor may drain it with a syringe (sounds worse than it is) or let your body absorb it on it’s own, in which case it may take weeks or months for it to go away.
I don’t think there is much else you can do about it. Most likely it will just gradually fade away at such a slow rate you won’t even notice it.
Questions you may want to ask your surgeon.
– Is this lump characteristic of a collection of fluid?
– If so, how long does she think it will take to go away?
Good luck and let me know how it turns out. Also, do you mind if I post the pictures you attached. Your scars and healing seems to be going very well.
Tanner, O.k., so it IS possible it’s fluid. I really appreciate your thoughts on this, it makes me feel a lot better. Yes, you may post my pics, just don’t put my name, please. I’m shy. I started out at 216 lbs. I am now 185 lbs. I feel pregnant and get sharp pains and twitching in my abdomen. It literally feels like the my skin is stretched so tight, it’s difficult to take a deep breath. It’s been almost 3 months since surgery. I have a lump of fat collected just under the hair line. I hope that goes away, it looks pretty bad. I feel like my body is trying to explode out through my skin. Anyway, thanks for letting me know what you’ve been through and the questions to ask. Hope to talk to you again.

The following post from our forum is from a woman who had a tummy tuck 7 weeks ago. She is swollen, has muscle pain, sees an indentation at her waist line and is wondering if this is normal after tummy tuck surgery.
Date: 12/05/2011 Submitted by: LizTummy Tuck Waist Indentation
I am 7 weeks post op, wake up flat, swollen at night, still have pain in muscle area, very swollen in bottom. I wear compression garments and I see an indentation where my pants buckle yet don’t buckle my pants. AWWW, so frustrated!!! Is this normal?
Date: 12/05/2011 Submitted by: Tanner
At 7 weeks post op, you are still in the prime healing/recovery phase. Everything that you describe seem like typical symptoms that I have heard other people talk about (except the indentation part) after their tummy tuck.
Swelling can take a long time to go away. My doctor told me “swelling around the wound or incision area should peak at about 3 days and that most of the swelling (80%) should be gone in 2 – 6 weeks and the remainder should be gone in 3 – 6 months”. According to that, you may have to be patient a bit longer for that last 20% to go away.
I would suspect the stomach pain to subside soon.
I don’t know what to tell you about the “indentation”. It may disappear when the swelling goes away or you may be stuck with it a long time. Later (when your doctor gives you the “OK”), exercise might help it fade away or blend into the contour of your body.
Thanks for getting back to me so quickly, what I’m calling an indentation is a groove just below my new belly button, it may be associated with it, when I last went to see PS, he told me to switch up my clothing and not wear anything tight (the fact is that I haven’t even been buckling my pants and I’ve been wearing long big shirts to cover my stomach and open pants). I go back to see him in January, but was wondering if this had happened to anyone else. Liz
Response – Liz,
I haven’t heard of it before, at least nobody has written in about it.
The only thing that comes close would be Hard Protrusion Below Belly Button After Tummy Tuck, but that doesn’t sound like the same thing.
